MOJO Magazine - Who Killed The Clash?

I'm a little late on this one, but I've just read through MOJO Magazine's November 2008 issue with its nearly 20-page feature on The Clash, with insights into the recording of Sandinista, Combat Rock and more from the likes of Kosmo Vinyl, Topper Headon, Mick Jones and Bernard Rhodes. (No Paul Simonon - he's in absentia again)

For any Clash fan, it's a good read - dirty laundry all the way, with insights into messy drug stories, Strummer's conflicts between emerging success and inner thoughts on it, Mick Jones increasing arrogance and petty childishness and all around dysfunctionality from all parties involved.

So does the writer Mat Snow get to the bottom of the article's question? Here's his take....

"So who killed The Clash? Topper maintains it was his fault, inadvertently, but that Bernard hastened to force him out and so destroyed the Clash's chemistry as a band that mattered. Mick agrees, though shares responsibility with Joe and Paul for wielding the knife. Before he died, Joe blamed the effect of unexpected success 'Rock the Casbah' had on a tired, jaded band, while for Kosmo, The Who (Shea Stadium concert) killed The Clash."
