Bodies of Water
I'm truly and deliciously enjoying the heck out of the 2007 Bodies of Water debut CD "Ears Will Pop and Eyes Will Blink." I sent $10 last week and into my arms comes the CD tonight. Lyric sheet included for those at home keeping score. My big amazing love right now is for track 4 (batting cleanup) "I Guess I'll Forget The Sound, I Guess, I Guess". Amazing singing throughout.
There's something bold and daring and unexpected about these Bodies of Water songs - shards of cool indie guitar, big brassy background vocals and thumping drums blended into completely engaging songs. One blog commenter wrote "They remind me much more of Danielson than Arcade Fire." Stereogum wrote this last August about Bodies of Water - "Los Angeles golden-tongued indie-gospel quartet Bodies Of Water make us want to see Hair while alternating between ABBA and the Sufjan team on an iPod. Or something." That's close, though I'm not sure on the Abba reference (too calculated, Abba was). Do I dare suggest some Adam & the Ants influences, maybe? Lots of tribal drums, twangy spaghetti Western guitar work and multi-layered vocals add up to a Prince Charming indie outtake.
All in all, some very exciting songs on "Ears Will Pop and Eyes Will Blink". Try out some of the band's songs at HypeM or at their Myspace site.
