Indaba - MakeHitSongs
Two new online music-making sites have cropped into my brain's attention recently, both worth exploring.
One is Indaba Music, which kindly hosted CMJ shows in NYC last week. Its site reads: "Create your profile, find other musicians, and invite them to make music with you in online recording sessions". Sounds great, but a trifle confusing, too. Do I go on a la Robert Pollard, looking for instrumental rock tracks to sing over? Or do I upload some of my backing tracks and hope someone will put a swell lead guitar track on it? It's all about building community, of course. I'll try to take a look during the weekend.
Mashable reviewed Indaba earlier this year.
The second offering is MakeHitSongs - The site's promo material reads..."Artists can register (free) to browse and listen to royalty-free instrumental demo songs from any genre. When an artist finds an instrumental that matches their style and lyrics they can buy it, download it and record their vocals over it to make a hit."
The MakeHitSongs site looks aimed more closely to hiphoppers and beatmasters than Indaba's singer/guitarists community. Hard to say. And there are prices attached to some of the backing tracks, so it may be more of an online exchange of musical pieces, which in itself is a wholly different beast, yes?
No time to check either out fully now, but I hope to this weekend. Anyone out there play with either of these yet? Drop insights into the comments.
