CMJ Saturday - Bloodshot BBQ

Bloodshot Records' annual CMJ BBQ was a great time on Saturday at Union Pool in Brooklyn - ice cold PBRs, tasty burgers and dogs from the grill, and fine fine fine music from the Bloodshot label.
I got there at about 3:30pm, just in time for Mary Lou Lord, who played a quick sweet set, punctuated by her cover of Paul Westerberg's It's a Wonderful Lie. The after a burger, beer and good coversation with Deirdre and Lisa, Jennie Benford took the stage. Her bluegrass stylin was wonderful, but the heat of the frightfully warm indoor club pushed me out in the open yard quaffing more cold beers. Cordero was excellent, with Ani Cordero sporting sweet steps and the band pumpin' out its electric southwest mix of swampy indie tunes.
But I was there for Bobby Bare Jr. who again knocked me out with his songs and performance on Saturday. In a trio format, Bobby was accompanied by a baritone sax and awesome drumbassist. The band was primed and excellent - all his original songs rocked and sounded great, and Bobby's cover of the Smiths' "What Difference Does it Make" (not 100% certain of this - beers, ya know...) was a keeper as well. See him when you can.
